Northern Gothic Press currently publishes Frightmarish: a Gothic LitZine. We are working on other small publishing projects, which we’ll share soon!

FICTION

Featured authors are invited to contribute the following to their featured issue:

  • Either 1 FLASH piece (up to 1.5k) + 1 non-fiction Feature (up to 500 words plus 25-word bio) OR
  • 1 FLASH piece (up to 2k + a short bio)

GENRES WE ACCEPT

  • Horror (incl. Body, Cosmic, Folk, Gothic, Occult, Paranormal, Weird, Psychological)
  • Dark Fantasy (Grimdark fantasy, Paranormal, Urban, Magical Realism)
  • Sci-Fi (Apocalyptic/Dystopian, Creatures, Futuristic Societies)

Please attach all submissions in .doc or .docx or rtf format—we will not accept submissions embedded in the body of email. Include your bio in your cover letter.

ARTWORK

  • Black & white, 300 dpi minimum
  • Our zine is US half-letter size (5.5 x 8.5 inches)
  • Horror
  • Dark Fantasy

PAYMENT

Contributors will receive $20 CAD and two contributor copies of the zine, paid via Paypal. Additional author copies are available at a discounted rate for distribution at art/craft/book fairs and other events you attend.

REPRINTS

We accept reprints. Please indicate on your submission if your piece is a reprint, including:

  • Market of original publication
  • Date of original publication

SIMULTANEOUS / MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS

We accept simultaneous submissions, just email us to withdraw your piece if it’s accepted elsewhere.

DIVERSITY

We welcome submissions from and depictions of persons of all ethnicities, backgrounds, faiths, genders, orientations, identities, ages (18+), and experiences. We encourage writers who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ to share their voices.

CONTENT WARNINGS

Please include a trigger warning in your submissions email for any instances of child/animal death. Works containing graphic or violent horror/abuse of any kind will not be considered.

AI WRITING

ABSOLUTELY NO AI written works. Any submission found to include plagiarized text or text generated by AI or machine software will be automatically rejected, and the submitter banned outright.

FORMATTING

  • Please submit your work using Modern Shunn Format. Basically…
  • Black text, 12 pt font, Times New Roman or Courier.
  • Double-spaced, 0.5 inch margins.
  • First page: contact information in the upper-left corner of the first page, including your legal name, email and preferred pronouns if you like
  • Approx. word count in the upper-right corner of the first page
  • Page Headers: right-side in the format SURNAME/STORY TITLE/PAGE NUM.
